The Woman Who Loves Giraffes

Directed by
Year: 2019
Country: Canada
Language: English

In 1956, four years before Jane Goodall ventured into the world of chimpanzees and seven years before Dian Fossey left to work with mountain gorillas, 23-year-old biologist Anne Innis Dagg made an unprecedented solo journey to South Africa to study giraffes in the wild. When she returned home a year later, the insurmountable barriers she faced as a female scientist proved hard to overcome. In THE WOMAN WHO LOVES GIRAFFES, Anne (now 86) retraces her steps, offering an intimate window into her life as a young woman, juxtaposed with a first-hand look at the devastating reality that giraffes are facing today. Anne and the species she loves have each experienced triumphs as well as setbacks. THE WOMAN WHO LOVES GIRAFFES gives us a moving perspective on both.

“This warm documentary uses one woman’s singular passion to fuel a tale of zoological discovery, blatant sexism and environmental alarm.”

“INSPIRING... A bright spot in the middle of this dark month, Alison Reid’s unabashedly sincere documentary offers gentle comfort even when it brushes up against tough subjects.”

“Her research was groundbreaking, and the 16 millimeter color footage she shot at the time, amply displayed in the documentary, is breathtaking.”

“Alison Reid’s loving documentary affectionately celebrates little-known giraffologist Dr. Anne Innis Dagg’s groundbreaking scientific work and generous contributions to women’s equality.”

“A uniquely captivating hybrid of a movie.”

“An inspiring documentary that should be at the top of everyone’s list of must-see films.”

Kino Marquee is a new initiative that creates virtual theaters for temporarily closed art house cinemas so they can offer their audiences the opportunity to see at home the films that would otherwise be playing on the big screen.

When the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the art house film industry became evident, we at Kino Lorber immediately thought about how we could help our independent theater partners across the country. We cannot release the kind of films we do without their support. So we wanted to find a way to work in partnership with them to help ensure that they will still be there after we all come out the other side. The Kino Marquee initiative offers a chance for these theaters to make money while their doors are closed.

Independent theaters need our support now more than ever. By buying a virtual “ticket” to watch this film on Kino Marquee, you’ll be directly supporting your local art house cinema. All revenue is being shared between distributor and exhibitor just as if you bought your ticket at the theater box office.

You can watch on your computer, phone, or tablet, or cast to your Google Chromecast or Smart TV. You can also download the Kino Now app for Roku or Apple TV (requires tvOS 9.0 or later) and watch the film there. See below for more detailed informatioin about the app options.

Very good question! If you’re landing on this page, we ask that you only rent the film if you are a customer of this theater. We are rapidly expanding the program to art house theaters in other cities, so we urge you to wait to watch the film when it is available locally and support the theater in your community. We also thank you for your cooperation in not sharing the link to this page beyond the community in which this theater is located. Let’s work together to keep all independent theaters healthy in this time of great uncertainty.
