The Jeff Lipsky Collection

"Jeff Lipsky, a career film distributor with a parallel path as an independent filmmaker, has a bold, brash approach to stark, plain filmmaking: rawness, bluntness, breathlessness in the face of incest, abortion, cancer, suicide and now, the Holocaust and Jewish identity. Some critics suggest Lipsky's stories, lovingly cast and achingly played, should be composed as novels or plays, but that's not what's in front of us in each and every one of the movies he's made. There are filmmakers whose work is sleek and slippery and flattering and formally conforming, but how many would have planned the ten-minute opening blind date in "Flannel Pajamas" (2006), or the brute, unvarnished, ceaseless monologue Julianne Nicholson has later on? (Or the concatenation of world-shifting confessions in "The Last"). The machinations and contortions and straight-up barefacedness of Lipsky's screenplay for "The Last" make once more for eye-popping performances. An unvarnished vehicle for the exceptional range of nonagenarian actress Rebecca Schull." -Ray Pride, Chicago New City News

Flannel Pajamas

On a rainy April night, two 30-something New Yorkers meet for a blind date at a local diner. It’s a magical evening, made manifest by that elusive combination of great chemistry and instant connection. Stuart (Justin Kirk) is a study in contrasts – seemingly confident, with a high-powered Broadway job that makes full use of his fast-talking smarts, yet clearly lonely and desperately eager for love. Younger and still finding her way, Nicole (Julianne Nicholson) is naturally more reticent, coping with city life far from her large and eccentric Montana family.  As Stuart and Nicole progress from love to marriage to discussions about starting a family, their relationship faces the challenges of critical friends, emotionally demanding relatives, time-consuming careers, different religions and the stresses caused by the endless negotiations all couples wage daily. With no easy answers, no heroes or villains, FLANNEL PAJAMAS is a brave foray into the mysterious but all-too recognizable terrain of the human heart.

Mad Women

Young and beautiful, Nevada Smith craves to find a place for herself in a family of overachievers. Her mother Harper is running for political office, her father Richard is a successful dentist and her older sister, Judith, is a pediatrician working overseas with Doctors Without Borders. In addition, the family is still grieving the death of a sister who died at a young age. When Richard is suddenly sent to prison, Nevada is overwhelmed with the emotional need to comfort her mother and does so in the most shocking way imaginable, pondering whether this has made her heroic, mythic, savior, or pariah. Kelsey Lynn Stokes, Reed Birney, Christina Starbuck, Frances Eve, and Jamie Harrold lend verisimilitude and poignance to a septet of characters facing cataclysmic yet virtuous challenges.

Molly's Theory of Relativity

A sexy, funny, surreal, and devastating portrait of a beautiful twenty-eight-year-old astrophysicist who, having unexpectedly and unfairly lost her job, is poised to make perhaps the first reckless decision of her life. Her story unfolds during eighteen hours, on Halloween, the scariest day of the year. Providing counsel on the fateful day are her husband, her father-in-law, three deceased relatives (!), a precocious nine-year-old trick-or-treater (who might as well be a pint-sized doppelgänger of Molly herself), her grandfather from Minot, North Dakota, and a six-year-old neighbor, who may or may not be imaginary. This tale of love and desperation, infused with a dollop of magical realism, observes the unbreakable bonds of family, and posits the notion that death is merely a relative thing.

Twelve Thirty

There are three women in the Langley household: Vivien (Karen Young), the mother, is caught between a fierce independence and an almost agoraphobic attachment to home; seductive and confident Mel (Portia Reiners) is a 19-year-old mirror image of her mother; Maura (Mamie Gummer), 22, is alienated, afraid and unable to pinpoint her place in the world. They live together in a seemingly close household, yet each is very much alone. The once man-of-the-house, Martin (Reed Birney), left long ago to pursue a new way of life, but keeps a shadow presence: he maintains a comfortable erotic tie to his ex-wife and a tentative relationship with Mel. Maura has all but shunned him. The family’s status quo explodes when Jeff (Jonathan Groff) walks into their combustible, dysfunctional world.
