Bacurau

Directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, and Juliano Dornelles
Year: 2019
Running Time: 131 minutes
Country: Brazil, France
Language: English and Portuguese with English subtitles

A few years from now... Bacurau, a small village in the Brazilian sertão, mourns the loss of its matriarch, Carmelita, who lived to be 94. Days later, its inhabitants (among them Sônia Braga) notice that their village has literally vanished from online maps and a UFO-shaped drone is seen flying overhead. There are forces that want to expel them from their homes, and soon, in a genre-bending twist, a band of armed mercenaries led by Udo Kier arrive in town picking off the inhabitants one by one. A fierce confrontation takes place when the townspeople turn the tables on the villainous outsiders, banding together by any means necessary to protect and maintain their remote community. The mercenaries just may have met their match in the fed-up, resourceful denizens of little Bacurau.

"Critic's Pick! Exhilarating. A heart-thumping political allegory that tips its hat to masters like John Carpenter."

"[A] boldly inventive political fantasy... offers a thrillingly imaginative playbook for resistance."

"A gloriously demented (and lightly psychedelic) Western."

"A genre-busting entertainment that is at once a portrait of a community, a horror thriller and a timely piece of political filmmaking. Bacurau is one of those movies like Parasite... where you're never quite sure which way it's heading."

Utterly distinctive filmmaking, executed with ruthless clarity and force. A scream of satirical defiance. This is not just fantasy, not just symbolism – it is the shape of things to come.”

"A modern-day western with some of the raw, hallucinatory power of a Sergio Leone epic. Rich and extremely filling."

“Feels like a favorite Gabriel García Márquez novel crossed with a Sergio Leone spaghetti western.”

"A perfect blend of blistering social commentary and illicit genre-flick thrills."

Kino Marquee is a new initiative that creates virtual theaters for temporarily closed art house cinemas so they can offer their audiences the opportunity to see at home the films that would otherwise be playing on the big screen.

When the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the art house film industry became evident, we at Kino Lorber immediately thought about how we could help our independent theater partners across the country. We cannot release the kind of films we do without their support. So we wanted to find a way to work in partnership with them to help ensure that they will still be there after we all come out the other side. The Kino Marquee initiative offers a chance for these theaters to make money while their doors are closed.

Independent theaters need our support now more than ever. By buying a virtual “ticket” to watch Bacurau on Kino Marquee, you’ll be directly supporting your local art house cinema. All revenue is being shared between distributor and exhibitor just as if you bought your ticket at the theater box office.

You can watch on your computer, phone, or tablet, or cast to your Google Chromecast or Smart TV. You can also download the Kino Now app for Roku or Apple TV (requires tvOS 9.0 or later) and watch the film there. See below for more detailed informatioin about the app options.

Very good question! If you’re landing on this page, we ask that you only rent the film if you are a customer of this theater. We are rapidly expanding the program to art house theaters in other cities, so we urge you to wait to watch Bacurau when it is available locally and support the theater in your community. We also thank you for your cooperation in not sharing the link to this page beyond the community in which this theater is located. Let’s work together to keep all independent theaters healthy in this time of great uncertainty.

Bacurau opened in New York on March 6, less than a week before theaters started shutting down. It was scheduled to expand to more than 60 cities in the coming weeks. Reviews had already hit. The theaters had been running trailers for weeks. We wanted to honor our commitment to those theaters and not let all those efforts go to waste. Bacurau is also a film about a community banding together in the face of a mysterious and malevolent threat. We can’t think of a better film to premiere on Kino Marquee.

To get your ticket, click the Screen button above. You’ll have to register for an account if you don’t already have one. After you’ve entered your payment information, your rental period will start immediately and last for five days.
